Like any other estimators, those working on plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work need a thorough knowledge of how the work is done in that trade before they can assemble accurate quotes for the work. To be accurate, the prices for these quotes will have to be estimated using the same meticulous method used by build- ing estimators with their work. That is, irst prepare an accurate takeoff of the work items, then, by means of unit prices, calculate the anticipated cost of these items of work.
Below we have identiied the main items of work and how they are measured in a takeoff for each of these trades. Plumbing Work Generally On small residential projects, such as single houses and duplex houses, it is unusual to see much information about the plumbing system on the project plans other than, perhaps, the location of the main plumbing vent and basement loor drains.
Lacking details from the plans, the estimator often has to draw sketches to be able to assess the plumbing layout for a house. These sketches can then help the estimator evaluate measurements such as the length of pipes for water supply and sewers on the project.

They can make or break an HVAC company. A company could have the best technicians, the best managers, and the best people in the office. So what happens behind the scenes with estimators?
What do estimators really look for in a bid? David Hoeing is an experienced senior estimator based out of the greater St. Louis area. He sat down with us to explain that estimating is all about understanding the complexities of many different variables, while at the same time navigating the politics of the industry.
Unfortunately that is rare. Restaurants, medical buildings, schools, and office buildings are common commercial clients who bid out jobs to HVAC companies. A lot of times these types of mistakes in bidding documents are unintentional and can get worked out with a phone call or site visit. If a discrepancy persists in the bidding documents then this will likely result in a skewed bid. Sometimes projects will change while the bidding process is ongoing.
But sometimes those in the HVAC industry who are writing a contract proposal will intentionally try to confuse the estimator to make a quick buck. The project always goes to the lowest bidder, so leaking these numbers amounts to telling other subcontractors how low they have to go if they want the project. This puts the estimator in a tight spot.
Should he talk with the HVAC company owner, resubmit a lower bid, and take a loss? First, this could be a trick to make the subcontractor come down to an artificially low price. Second, and this is where knowledge is really power, the estimator will have already taken a good and careful look at the project. A good estimator will know to a high degree of accuracy what a project is worth.
This allows the subcontractor to keep very tight margins that account for all the costs of a project — labor, materials, taxes, and more. Estimates can also leak out due to favoritism. It takes a good HVAC company owner to tell the difference between someone showing favoritism versus someone trying to artificially lower a bid. In this case, if the franchise puts a project on the market and other contractors underbid you, the franchise owner might come to you and try and get you to lower your bid.
Sometimes the reverse is true. Some will say the first big number that comes to mind, while others will take a more scientific approach that involves calculating the volume of the jar and a jellybean.
In this sense estimates are seldom correct. But a good estimator is going to come up with highly accurate numbers most of the time. Considering that the lowest bid always wins, you might think there is considerable pressure to low-ball estimates.

During the design and planning process of a new construction project, a mechanical engineer specifies and designs an HVAC system to best fit the given project. This section of the building construction documents is drawn in great detail and offers a valuable and, in most cases, accurate resource for an HVAC subcontractor to estimate the materials and cost of the project. The process of estimating an HVAC job is a generally straightforward task that can usually be successfully completed by just about anyone with a general understanding of HVAC construction.
Locate the scale of the mechanical engineering sheet of the building plans and the corresponding scale factor on the architect scale; the scale of the drawing is most commonly located under the title of the sheet. Measure and mark the total length of mechanical duct lines refer to the sheets key for line types and count the total number of turns the duct work makes, as turns in the duct work require the use of either flex duct or angle duct material.
Depending on the project, there may be more than one type of duct width or diameter used on the project; in this case, make a list of the different duct sizes and mark the total length and number of turns for each. The size of the duct will be noted on the sheet and will be tagged to the specific duct area. Refer to the mechanical engineering sheet for specific product information, if applicable.
Make a tallied list of all mechanical equipment; this category applies to fans, air handlers, heating units and air-conditioning units.
The specifications for this equipment will be noted clearly either next to the individual units or on the key notes section of the sheet. The size or capacitymodel and manufacturer of the units should be included on the list. Make a tallied list of all supplementary mechanical equipment. Call a local HVAC building supply center and quote the current unit cost of listed items found in Steps 2 through 4. Stairways, elevators and escalators - Location, temperature of space if open to unconditioned area. Horsepower of machinery, ventilated or not. People - Number, duration of occupancy, nature of activity, any special concentration. At times, it is required to estimate the number of people on the basis of square feet per person or on average traffic.
Lighting - Wattage at peak. Type - incandescent, fluorescent, recessed, exposed. If the light are recessed, the type of air flow over the lights, exhaust, return or supply, should be anticipated. At times, it is required to estimate the wattage on a basis of watts per sq. Motors - location, name plate and brake horsepower and usage. The latter is of great significance and should be carefully evaluated.
It is always advisable to measure power input where possible.
